Facial Liposuction

Facial liposuction is a very common, popular procedure designed for the permanent removal of fatty tissue from your cheeks, chin, and neck. Excess neck fat can make a patient appear older than they are. Removal of fat through Liposuction or Lipectomy (cutting out fat) — sometimes combined with facelift or Platysma Plication (neck tightening) — can restore a youthful appearance or slenderize the face by reducing areas of fullness.

Patients with good skin tone who have fatty deposits see the best results from facial liposuction alone. Age is not a major factor, but older patients may have diminished skin elasticity and may not achieve the same results as younger patients with tighter skin. In such cases, combining facial liposuction with a facelift is recommended.

If weight gain occurs after liposuction, fat may redeposit in the remaining fat tissue. Although all fat cannot be removed to avoid an unesthetic look, the procedure can be repeated if necessary. The removal of fat by liposuction and lipectomy is permanent. Gaining significant weight after surgery might cause rippling in treated areas, depending on skin elasticity.

Factors Affecting Results

  • Physical condition
  • Genetic makeup
  • Diet
  • Exercise
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol intake
  • Skin elasticity

To be a good candidate for liposuction, you must have realistic expectations about what the procedure can achieve.

Liposuction carries a higher risk for individuals with medical issues such as diabetes, significant heart or lung disease, poor blood circulation, or those who have recently undergone surgery near the area to be contoured.

These surgeries can be performed in our in-office surgical suite under the anesthesia option of your choice.

Before Surgery

We will review your medical history to assess your overall health. Dr. Reynolds will discuss how your face can look post-surgery and what you can realistically expect. Our goal is to create a natural appearance that meets your expectations. Photos and computer imaging are conducted to estimate the improvement following surgery.

You will receive preoperative instructions, including avoiding smoking and certain drugs containing aspirin for several weeks before surgery to minimize excess bleeding. Antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection.

Facial Liposuction Surgery

Facial liposuction is typically performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia on an outpatient basis in our in-office surgical suite. Through a tiny incision (less than 1/2 inch) under the chin and sometimes behind the earlobe, a narrow tube (cannula) is inserted to vacuum out the deep fat layer. The cannula is moved back and forth to break up fat cells and suction them out. A vacuum pump provides the suction action, and the procedure may take an hour or more.

Postoperative Information

After liposuction, scars go through a maturation process. For the first 8-12 weeks, they may appear red and raised. Over the next 6-12 months, they will likely become pale, flat, and soft. You may experience numbness, burning, or tingling around the incision site; these symptoms are usually temporary. Please inform us if you are prone to keloid scars.
