Facial Implants

Considering Facial Surgery?

Facial implants can improve and enhance facial contours, providing a more harmonious balance to your face and features so that you feel better about the way you look.

There are many implants available, made from a variety of materials. They may help strengthen a jawline or bring the chin or cheekbones into balance with the rest of the face.

What to Expect from a Facial Implant

Facial implants can enhance your appearance and bolster your self-esteem. If you seek improvement (not perfection) and have realistic expectations, you may find a facial implant to be a suitable choice. For younger patients, facial implants can help bring better balance to facial features. For example, a teenage girl may wish to reshape her nose or bring her chin forward to achieve better proportions. Mature patients may combine implants with another cosmetic procedure, such as placing implants over the cheekbones during a facelift to restore a more youthful appearance.

Our doctors use MedPore and Implantech products, which come pre-contoured in multiple sizes for areas such as the chin, cheekbone, orbital rim (around the eyes), and nose. Custom implants can also be created for reconstruction of nearly any facial area.

Types of Anesthesia

In some cases, facial implant surgery may only require local anesthesia combined with a sedative. However, intravenous (IV) sedation or general anesthesia is often recommended for patient comfort.

Chin Implants

Chin implant surgery typically takes 30 minutes to an hour. The implant size and shape will be chosen to enhance your appearance, then inserted into a pocket created over the front of the jawbone. The small incision used to create the pocket is made either inside the mouth (along the lower lip) or in the skin under the chin.

After surgery, the chin may be taped to minimize swelling and discomfort. Sutures in the skin are usually removed within five to seven days. If an incision is made inside the mouth, the sutures will dissolve on their own.

Recovering from Chin Implant Surgery

Some discomfort and swelling are normal for several days. Temporary difficulty smiling or talking, as well as bruising around the chin and neck, may occur. You will receive instructions on dental hygiene, eating, and activity restrictions during recovery.

Cheek Implants

Cheek implant surgery typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. If performed alongside another cosmetic procedure, such as eyelid surgery, the cheek implants may be inserted through those incisions. Otherwise, an incision is made inside the mouth under the upper lip, and a pocket is created to insert the implant.

After surgery, a dressing is applied to minimize discomfort and swelling. Side effects vary, particularly if combined with another cosmetic procedure.

Recovering from Cheek Implant Surgery

Post-operative care instructions will include dietary restrictions and activity limitations. These instructions may differ if other procedures were performed at the same time. Mouth and lip movement may be temporarily reduced. Stitches inside the mouth typically dissolve within about 10 days.

Lower Jaw Implants

Lower jaw implant surgery generally takes one to two hours. Internal incisions are made on each side of the mouth to create a pocket for the implant. Dissolving sutures close these incisions.

Recovering from Lower Jaw Implant Surgery

Swelling often peaks 24 to 48 hours post-surgery, with significant swelling subsiding over several days. However, mild swelling may persist for several months, delaying the final contour's appearance.

Your activities and diet will be restricted during the healing phase. Talking, smiling, and mouth movement may be limited temporarily. You will receive specific instructions on dental and oral hygiene during recovery.

Getting Back to Normal

With facial surgery, you may feel and look better quickly. However, you should avoid activities that might jar or bump your face for several weeks. Discuss any concerns with your surgeon.

Your New Look

You may need several weeks or even months to accurately evaluate your new appearance. Give yourself time to adjust to your look. You may find that most people won’t recognize you’ve had facial implant surgery.
