Surgically facilitated orthodontic treatment (SFOT) involves making cuts partially through the bone between and sometimes above the teeth to facilitate moving the teeth with braces. The cuts create a “regionally acceleratory phenomenon” which makes the teeth move orthodontically three times faster than normal. It can also help expand the part of the jawbone that the teeth are in.
Sometimes this is combined with bone grafting over the roots of the teeth so they can move farther than normally possible with conventional orthodontics.
SFOT can often be effective enough to negate the need for more invasive procedures such as orthognathic surgery. When significant expansion of the upper jaw arch form is needed, it may be combined with SARPE (surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion) or MARPE (mini-screw assisted rapid palatal expansion) with an MSE (maxillary skeletal expander).
