Surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion utilizes cuts in the upper jaw bone to expand the maxilla.
The orthodontist places a rapid palatal expander then the surgery is completed. After the surgery the previously placed palatal expander is activated over a period of weeks to expand the upper jaw (maxilla) and thus the palate. Bone naturally fills in the gap by a process of “distraction osteogenesis” (as the two sides of the maxilla pull apart, new bone grows).
If the rapid palatal expander (RPE) is attached to the bone by screws, then the force on the maxilla is skeletal instead of tooth born. In this case, we call it an MSE or “maxillary skeletal expander” and the SARPE, is now a MARPE.
