As we age, the skin around the eyes can become loose and droop, leading to puffiness, bags under the eyes, and sagging upper eyelids that may even impair vision. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, addresses these concerns by removing excess skin, muscle, and fat. This rejuvenating procedure is performed in our state-of-the-art surgical center, but only after a comprehensive evaluation confirms you are a suitable candidate. At Reynolds Oral and Facial Surgery, your safety and satisfaction are always our top priorities.
Blepharoplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. Upper eyelid surgery involves incisions made in the natural creases of the lids, allowing for the removal or repositioning of excess tissue and tightening of the skin. Lower eyelid surgery may involve incisions just below the lash line or inside the eyelid (transconjunctival approach) to remove or redistribute fat and smooth the area beneath the eyes.
The procedure usually takes one to two hours, depending on whether one or both eyelids are being treated and whether it's combined with other facial procedures. The goal is to restore a more alert and youthful appearance without altering the natural shape of your eyes.
Before surgery, you’ll receive detailed preoperative instructions. You will be asked to stop smoking and avoid medications or supplements that increase bleeding, such as aspirin or certain anti-inflammatories. Antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection. It’s also recommended to arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure and assist you during the first 24 hours of recovery.
Following the procedure, your eyes may be covered with lubricating ointment and cold compresses to minimize swelling. Mild discomfort, tightness, and bruising are common and typically managed with oral medications. Stitches are usually removed within 5 to 7 days. Swelling and discoloration tend to resolve within 10 to 14 days, although subtle swelling can persist for a few weeks.
You may experience temporary dryness, tearing, or sensitivity to light. It’s important to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and sun exposure for several weeks. Most patients return to work and normal routines within 7 to 10 days.
Final results become visible gradually as healing progresses, with improvements continuing for several months. While the effects of blepharoplasty are long-lasting, the natural aging process will continue. Most patients are highly satisfied with their more refreshed and youthful appearance.
With extensive experience in both cosmetic and reconstructive facial procedures, we are committed to excellence in patient care, surgical precision, and natural-looking results. Schedule your private consultation today to learn more about whether blepharoplasty is right for you.
